Bad news from the coalfields of Kentucky, where the Herald-Leader reports:
A mine foreman died early Saturday while fixing a canopy in a Harlan County mine.
James A. Bailey, 32, of Loyall was pinned by the protective covering that he was installing on a mine shuttle car, according to the state Energy and Environment Cabinet.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration reports that the accident occurred at the Timber Tree No. 9 Mine operated by Parten Brothers Contracting Inc. This is the 3rd coal-mining fatality so far this year nationwide and the 2nd in Kentucky.
